One of our very first blog posts featured a South Carolina beach we love: Surfside Beach, also known as The Family Beach! But the post was from 2018 so it’s time to revisit and update it with a few more spots that we have come to enjoy and want to put on your radar for the next time you are looking to have a coastal getaway! Surfside Beach is just a short drive away, about 3 hours and 45 mins from the Queen City–so be sure to put this on your list of drive-able, weekend trips!

If you’re not an early riser and can’t make it to enjoy a sunrise, know that the sunsets are just as pretty at Surfside Beach–even if it’s an east coast beach!

Everyone knows about Myrtle Beach–some might even know it as the Grand Strand or by less favorable nicknames: Dirty Myrtle or Redneck Riviera. South of this very touristy and often crowded beach, you’ll find Surfside Beach. While it can still get busy during peak summer season, itβs not quite as crazy as Myrtle. Itβs a golf cart-friendly town, and one thing we love doing is just βcruisingβ around to smell the ocean air and see what’s new and going on in the neighborhood. There are many beach rental properties in the area, so go ahead and book your next trip. We know you’ll love it.
Here are a few of our favorite spots you should check out if you ever find yourself in this coastal town and for a full list, you can check out our Google list here: Surfside Google Maps

MILK & HONEY
This has to be our latest fave spot in Surfside Beach–they’re serving up chill vibes, great breakfast, delicious pastries, and great coffee PLUS they also have a cute shop of curated home goods, gifts, and PLANTS!!!
We couldn’t stop gushing over everything–the food, YUM! The coffee, YES! The shop and plant selection, YASSSSSS!!!!
Our in-laws suggested the spot which recently just opened in December, but we didn’t realize that the owner, Chef Mason Zeglen, might be someone you’ve seen on TV! He is a two-time winner of βGuyβs Grocery Gamesβ on the Food Network, and he was also on βThe Big Brunchβ on MAX.

Bangkok House
So this spot is technically in Myrtle Beach but it’s only about 15 mins north of Surfside and worth checking out. Our family found this hole in the wall the very first time we went to Myrtle Beach in 2003, and we make sure to stop by every time we are in the area.
If you love Thai food, this will hit the spot!

Benjamin’s Bakery & Cafe
This spot is a fave among the locals and if you stop by for breakfast, don’t be surprised to find yourself in a line! But they work fast and efficiently–plus the baked goods are totally worth it!
We always have Saturday breakfast bagels, coffee, and a couple of dossants–flaky goodness combo of donut + croissant! But pro-tip: they are a full deli shop and you can get some great sandwiches and wraps, too!

DAGWOOD’S DELI
This is another localsβ spot–and the tourists have definitely caught on! They are often busy, especially during peak dining time BUT their consistent service and solid food always delivers!
Pro-tip: call ahead and place a to-go order! We usually spend the day at the beach and once we’ve worked up an appetite–Dagwood’s is our go-to and then it’s a sure nap time shortly after!
Our fave things to order: “Smokin’ Joe” Frazier Fries, Bumstead Club (pictured), Philly Cheesesteak, Naked Shrimp, and Wings

And if you’re looking for things to do/places to check out besides hanging out at the beach and eating…
- Huntington Beach State Park would be our top pick! Check out a historic castle, Atalaya Castle among other activities. Click here for pro-tips from the SC State Park site.
- Myrtle Beach State Park: When you’re tired of the crowds but still want to be on the beach, escape to this state park! Click here for more info.
- Brookgreen Gardens is also a destination to see but we highly recommend checking out what’s going on first to see if it’s the best time to visit (ie., exhibits, bloom season). Click here for the website.
